The Moth Diaries

hmmm.. i liked it, but it’s gotten alot of bad reviews, but i can
understand why.

* pretty bad narration by the lead which comes when
the movie hasn’t had any.. so it’s jarring.

* a supernatural character has a flashback way to early
spoiling the “is she or isn’t she” vibe

* the ending mirrors the lack of exciting finale that the
original Dracula novel had

* eyebrows!

that said, i did enjoy the airy, dreamlike quality of the film,
sarah bolger is a cutie, lily cole is a pretty effective villain
i like how she’s incredibly tall (model) and her creey song,
i liked scott speedman, school girl lesbians,
director mary harron always gets A look because she
directed American Psycho.

I say give it a look if you got time to spare.

A Question: Have you ever watched one of those shock videos like “spankwire” “One Man one Screw Driver” ” Putrid Sex Object”, etc. I wonder if you think videos like those, influence the transformation of horror movies in the aspects of gore and format and the problem that new horror suffers to REALLY scare audiences now and the ones that will come later? — thepalehorse666

i personally have seen some of that stuff, i’m sure
danny avoids it. i think that material probably
influences a fair amount of the more indie horror
films (august underground, inbred) films that are
not really constrained by mainstream methods.

although i can’t really say what influences what,
i think, there are horrors in humanity that simply
can’t be captured on celluloid. it can be made into
a facsimile, a stylized version to creep people out
but it can’t ever reach the level that reality can.

i think both can inspire one another actually,
where one guy got arrested after he was
inspired by DEXTER to meet a man off
the internet and kill him… as well as when
films like TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE is
inspired by Ed Gein. certain up minds have
taken the next step of turning fantasy into
reality and vice versa.

do i think it affects new horror sure, i can’t speak
for every film maker, but, a newspaper called
alarma! has a crime photographer that gives his
works (of atrocities) to SFX people, so they know
how to make a corpse look real on film… stuff like
that.

there are also the opposite types of film like
Paranormal Activity, that rely on old school
scary ghost stories. it really depends on a
cultural aspect of who’s watching/making these
movies. those films are relatively bloodless but
keep making money… but then, so did the Saw
movies. it’s a definite tide of tastes.

i think you can see the influences of real gore
horror in much more exploitative horror films
than, say, an Insidious. i think an audience can
be scared of many things, it’s more of a level of
what they’re comfortable in being scared of
on the big screen.

Well, that was a rather large leap.

You went from the shitfest that was V/H/S to this. I mean, V/H/S’s Amateur Night and 10/31/98 were amazing. And, maybe I’m the only one but I liked Tuesday the 17th as well. But Tape 56, Second Honeymoon and The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger were fucking terrible.

On a semi-related note, I have a few theories that I would like to explain but those will come last (AND UNDERNEATH A “READ MORE”) due to spoilers and possible spoilers.

On to the ratings…

Tape 49: 6.62/10

I’m a little confused but based on my theories, that’s expected.

Phase 1 Clinical Trials: 6.5/10

The idea behind this is great but it was only partially pulled off. I was disappointed in the make-up on the ghosts and Adam isn’t that good of an actor. He has a few moments but I feel like if he were to have a roll any bigger than something in a short he’d fall flat. The last moments, where the video cuts off, were a little silly. Other than that the ending or second half (when he wakes up just before Clarissa shows up) was what kicked this up a bit in the ratings.

A Ride In The Park: 7.5/10

It’s been a very long time since a zombie flick or any sort had really caught my interest. I love love loved the fact that something was explained that had gone completely ignored in the past. “Why don’t zombies eat themselves?” And this tells you the answer. I also loved the ending. ~~-cough phone call induced lapse of humanity cough-~~

Safe Haven: 666/10 (haha, sorry)

This is essentially what I’ve been looking for in a film “of demonic origin”, if you will. If this was a feature length film I’d fucking worship it. But honestly, I think this does great as a short film. Especially with the ending 30 seconds or so. I was cracking up. It was so serious up until that moment. But it worked and didn’t hurt it whatsoever. I loved this. I really did. I can’t say much about this, mostly for the lack of words to describe it.

Alien Abduction Slumber Party: 9/10

Jason, if you were to add onto this at some point, I would be so grateful. I really think that you could easily pull off an alien flick. Anyway, superior writing on this one. I remember being younger and me and my friends would be just like that. Now, I lacked any siblings but constant fucking around with my friends was common. The aliens were amazing. Simple yet still crazy looking. You took Grave Encounters and poured X-Files over it and when rinsed it off in your own film-juice. And man, did it, I don’t know, sprout the best lemons ever. Something like that.

Whatever.

Awesome.

Overall: 8/10

All together a great film. It’s a shame it’s predecessor couldn’t live up. Or should I say…
